Adventure One
Sanibel Island, Florida
January 22-23, 2011
Travel Mode: Car, 2.5 hours
We arrived in Sanibel around 2PM on Saturday afternoon, after a scenic drive over the bridge onto the island we were ready to explore. First stop was the hotel Tween Resort. The pricing was good, and the location was great. Accommodations were similar to a Holiday Inn.
After checking in, we headed to lunch at Island Cow! The reviews on Yelp didn't lie, this place was great. Dispite the cold weather we were seated outside next to the heaters. The food was great and the pricing was very reasonable. We left very satisfied.
After lunch we decided to check out the Shell Museum, since Sanibel is known for its shells. It was a little dry but the very informational video taught us a lot about Mollusks and shells in general. We stayed for about an hour, then decided to head back to the hotel to check out the beach.
This is when we realized that it was too freezing outside for beach weather. We almost blew away! The beach was lovely but the bitter wind pushed us back inside. As a side note for all you travelers out there be sure to check the weather before packing!
Around 8pm we went to Sunset Grill for dinner. By this time the island is mostly dark and it seems as if most places are closed. We were 1 of 2 parties within the restaurant. The pricing was much higher than we had anticipated, so in this regard we shared dishes and appetizers. The Seafood Pasta was delightful and Homemade cheesecake for dessert was the perfect end of this great day!
Day 2
We started day 2 on Bowman's Beach, we shelled for an hour! The weather was beautiful along with the views. This would be the best beach of the trip although at the time we didn't know it. It was a beautiful scene with all the shells, starfish, and rocks. There were surfers and fisherman everyone out just enjoying a wonderful beginning of a new day!
After Breakfast in the hotel (Ranchero Eggs were delightful) we decided to take a drive around the island.
First Stop was The Light House and the Fisherman's Pier. The lighthouse was incredible and the oldest on the island built in the 40's it was once meant to be torn down but was saved by the outcry from the locals and now it is a landmark!
We then drove through Ding Darling's Nature trail, this was a little boring in my opinion but if you like to bird watch then this 4-6 mile trail is for you. You can ride on Bike or Car, but Bike would be a bit more personal as it gets you closer to the scenery.
We then headed to the other side of Bowman's Beach for some more shelling and just to soak up some rays of sunshine!
Having no lunch we were ready for an early dinner. We decided on Doc Ford's, a fisherman turned author turned restaurant owner. The vibe was very sports bar like, with TVs everywhere and football playing. The food was spectacular! Everything eaten was delicious. We started with Black Bean Dip and Doc's Bread, then followed with Mussels, they were tasty and fresh.
After an amazing meal it was time to load up and head home!
To sum up Sanibel, it is a great place to go and relax. Also if sports are your thing this would be a wonderful place for you. Biking, Segways, Parasailing, Wave Riding. All that and more, it is also very pet friendly also a huge plus!
It is right off of Fort Meyer's check it out the next time you are looking for a quiet vacation with lots of exercise and rest.
Until our Next Adventure....
